Medical Device Production in Mexico Grows 30%

In Mexico, the medical device industry has seen a robust growth, with production rising from $13.9 billion in 2019 to $18.1 billion in 2023. Exports also surged, reaching $13.7 billion this year. The Medical Expo, set for October 29-31 in Mexico City, will bring together over 25,000 healthcare professionals, enhancing collaboration and innovation in the sector.


The medical device industry in Mexico has experienced significant growth in recent years, consolidating itself as a strategic and dynamic sector for the national economy. According to data presented by Carlos Salazar Gaytán, president of the National Association of Health Suppliers (ANAPS), exports of medical devices increased from 10.7 billion dollars in 2019 to 13.7 billion in 2023, representing a growth of 28.5%. Meanwhile, the internal consumption of these devices also grew by 15%, rising from 9.6 to 11 billion dollars in the same period.

Salazar emphasized Mexico's competitiveness in the global market, especially in terms of manufacturing costs of medical devices, positioning it as the most competitive country to enter the U.S. market. Furthermore, he mentioned that ten of the world's leading manufacturers of medical devices already have production in Mexico.

Regarding investments, the injection of capital into the sector was highlighted, such as that of the global company Becton Dickinson, which announced an investment of 80 million dollars for the construction of a specialized plant. Other mentioned cases include the investment from Fisher & Paykel of New Zealand, which allocated 100 million dollars for the construction of a respiratory device plant in Baja California, generating one thousand direct jobs.

The Seventh Edition of Medical Expo, the most important national fair in the medical device sector, will take place from October 29 to 31 at the World Trade Center in Mexico City. This event is expected to gather more than 25 thousand attendees, with participation in workshops, conferences, and dialogue tables.

In the context of growth and development of the sector, the importance of strengthening productive ecosystems and coordination among companies, suppliers, universities, and research centers has been emphasized to continue enhancing innovation and knowledge exchange in favor of quality, safety, and patient care.
